Stories and Direct Quotes
Cain, you will be a restless wanderer on the earth....unless....
'Cain, where is your brother Abel?'the Lord said.
Gen 4:9
Wo ist dein Bruder Abel? - German
"I don't know," Cain replied. Gen 4:9
Was weiß ich? - German
The Lord said:
"What have you done?"
Gen 4:10
Warum hast du das getan? (Why did you do that?) - German
He replied. 'Am I my brother's keeper?' Gen 4:9
Soll ich ständig auf meinen Bruder aufpassen?
(Should I continually watch over my brother?) - German
The Lord said:
"Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground." Gen 4: 10
Hörst du nicht, wie das Blut deines Bruders von der Erde zu mir schreit? - German

Cain said: 'Oh.' His face was downcast.
'Will you kill me?'
No.
"Whoever finds me will kill me." Gen 4: 14
Jedermann kann mich ungestraft töten. (Everyone can kill me and go unpunished.) - German
"Not so, if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over."
The Lord put a "Let him live" mark on Cain.
"Cain, when you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you."
'What will I do? I can't be a farmer with no yield!'

"Cain, you will be a restless wanderer on the earth,"
said the Lord.
Cain said:
"I will be a restless wanderer on the earth."
"You already banished my father from the garden of Eden."
"Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence."
"My punishment is more than I can bear."
So Cain went out from the Lord's presence.

Eve said:
'Adam, where is our son Abel?'
Adam said, 'I don't know.'
She asked Cain:
'Cain, where is your brother Abel?
'I don't know.'

'Let's go out to the field.' said Eve to Cain not suspecting anything.
'Oh, no!....Look! There is Abel's body, fresh blood all over the ground and a stone covered with blood.' (DNA!)
'Who did it?...

Now the mother remembered the blood stains and dirt from the field on her son Cain when he came home. The silent witnesses to the deed!

'What have you done!?'
'I killed him.'
'Now you are under God's curse, driven from this ground.'

Cain said:
"Today God and you are driving me from the land.
'Will you kill me?'

'No. How can I.'

"My punishment is more than I can bear.", said Cain.
(The Lord says though that we can bear the burdens he gives.)
'What shall I do? I can't be a farmer without land?
The Lord said to me that I will be a restless wanderer on the earth."
I will be hidden from your presence."
So Cain left his mother Eve.

Eve lamented, 'Oh, no! 2 sons missing in one day!
I know one is dead, but the other one will be wandering!
What shall I do?

Adam asked his wife. "Why is your face downcast?"
'It's about Cain.'

'Eve, where is our son Cain?'

'Cain killed Abel in the field. How? A stone...blood...He was angry. His face was downcast. Now he will be wandering.'

Adam cried out, 'Oh, no! 2 sons missing in one day!'

Cain wandered, wandered, wandered and built 2 cities, but they did not last.

Cain remembered what the Lord had said to him before he murdered Abel.
"If you do what is right, will you not be accepted?
Sin desires to have you, but you can and must rebuke it."
'Can I even now be the master of sin, instead of sin being my master by rebuking sin now?....Lord, please answer me.
Lord, help me do what is right.'

And the Lord listened to Cain's prayer.

Cain stopped wandering. Cain went to and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
He took a wife and had a son Enoch. He never tried to be a farmer. And he built a city called Enoch!
Cain learned firsthand that:
"Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labour in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain." Isaiah 127:1

Did Adam and Eve watch for their son Cain to return home, just like the prodigal? The author of the "Children of Eden" musical thought so. In the play Adam died before he knew what had happened ultimately to Cain. In the musical, Eve found out through a prayer to "the Father" that much went well with Cain. Well, ponder this one.

Cain's children knew his story through the generations.
Down the generations, his descendant Lamech murdered a young man. But he knew about God and God's reaction to Cain.
At that time men began to call on the name of the Lord!
Lamech acknowledged his sin even to his wives and he claimed God would extend the same mercies to him as he did to Cain, including his own "Let him live" mark.
Lord God, creator of the universe, Eden and every place we can live or hide, show us your mercies, when we sin.
Help those that are angry.
Help those whose face is downcast.
Help those that are looking for a person who ends up to be "missing".
Help those that are murderers who repent.
Help those that find evidence of murders and those that find out who did it.
Help those that never want to see a murderer again.
Help relatives, friends and acquaintances of murderers deal with the time of "missing" wanderers.
Thank you that you give us many chances to repent for all our sins.
Thank you for forgiveness.
Thank you that WITH YOU we can build a house and even many.
Thank you that WITH YOU we can guard a city and even many.
Amen.
