Stories and Direct Quotes
Faint for love - If you find him...tell him I am faint with love.
There were 2 searches in the Song of Songs for the lover by the bride.
Song of Songs 3: 1-4
Song of Songs 5:2-8

The first one ended positively with:
"I held him and would not let him go."

On her search on the city streets, the watchmen found her.

They let her pass, because they must have seen the one she was looking for.
"Scarcely had I passed them, when I found the one my heart loves."

She had been searching because she couldn't sleep.
"All night long on my bed, I looked for the one my heart loves."

She had looked for him in the house and then in the city.
"I looked for him and did not find him."

So she asked a general question,
"Have you seen the one my heart loves?"
and that brought the answer.

The second search was inconclusive.
The second search seems to be set in a good dream that turns bad.
"I slept, but my heart was awake."

"Listen! My lover is knocking."

"I opened for my lover."

"but my lover had left; he was gone."

"I called him, but he did not answer."

"My heart sank at his departure."

Again the bride looked for him but did not find him.

Again she looked in the city streets.
Again this time the watchmen found her as they made their rounds.

But what did they do?
"They beat me."

"They bruised me."

"They took away my cloak."

Her heart must have sunk some more.
She went to find refuge with the women she knew.
She asked them to help her bring her lover a message.
She thought about it.
"What will you tell him?"

She had to think quickly. Don't tell him I am bruised. No.
"Tell him I am faint with love."

If he knows I am faint, that is similar to being sick, weary or weak with bruises. He should come on his own without unduely worrying.

Lord Jesus, help people of responsibility not take advantage of searching people who have no support.
Soften their hearts to have hearts like the women in the Song.
Be with those that fear having their loved ones missing, especially those that have nightmares.
Let anyone who goes away leave messages with others or write a note that is easily found, so that others don't worry and search unnecessarily.
Let us be careful when opening doors--our loved one may not be on the other side!
Thank you Lord, for all the safe houses in the world and our familiar homes.
Thank you that missing bridegrooms generally want to be found.
Amen.
